How to Convert Hexadecimal to Binary

Learn how to expand each hexadecimal digit into its independent 4-bit binary nibble. Follow clear rules, review worked solutions, and practice with 5 interactive exercises.

The 4-Bit Expansion Method

Because 16 is equal to 2⁴, each hexadecimal digit directly represents four binary bits:

  1. Take each hex digit in sequence from left to right.
  2. Find its decimal value (0–9 remain the same; A=10, B=11, C=12, D=13, E=14, F=15).
  3. Convert that value into a 4-bit binary nibble using weights 8, 4, 2, and 1.
  4. Ensure every nibble has exactly 4 binary digits (add leading zeros if necessary: e.g. 5 is 0101, not 101).
  5. Concatenate all nibbles together.

Hint: E equals 14.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to technical and practical questions regarding this tool and base-16 conversion.

Why must each hex digit expand to exactly 4 bits instead of fewer?

Because omitting leading zeros in intermediate nibbles distorts the bit alignment. For instance, if you write 2 as "10" instead of "0010" inside the number 0x12, you will produce 110 (decimal 6) instead of 00010010 (decimal 18).

Can you convert hex to binary by converting to decimal first?

While technically possible, converting through decimal is much slower and prone to arithmetic mistakes with large numbers. Expanding directly into 4-bit nibbles is instant and requires no multiplication or division.
