How to Convert Binary to Hexadecimal

Learn how to group binary digits into 4-bit nibbles from right to left, add leading zero padding, and translate each group into a single hexadecimal character. Includes 5 interactive practice problems.

The 4-Bit Nibble Grouping Method

Because 16 is equal to 2⁴, you can convert any binary sequence to hex without complex arithmetic:

  1. Group in 4s from the right: Start at the least significant bit (far right) and segment the bits into blocks of 4.
  2. Pad the left if necessary: If the leftmost block has fewer than 4 bits, add leading zeros.
  3. Calculate the 8-4-2-1 sum for each block:
    • Bit 3 (left) = weight 8
    • Bit 2 = weight 4
    • Bit 1 = weight 2
    • Bit 0 (right) = weight 1
  4. Replace sums 10–15 with letters A–F.
  5. Concatenate the hex characters together.

Interactive Practice Problems

Test your 4-bit nibble grouping skills on these 5 practice exercises.

Problem 1

Convert binary 11010110 to hexadecimal.

Hint: Split into two 4-bit groups: 1101 and 0110.

Problem 2

Convert binary 11111111 to hexadecimal.

Hint: Both 4-bit nibbles are full.

Problem 3

Convert binary 00011111 to hexadecimal.

Hint: Decimal 31.

Problem 4

Convert binary 10100011 to hexadecimal.

Hint: First nibble has a decimal value of 10.

Problem 5

Convert binary 1111101000 to hexadecimal (unpadded 10-bit).

Hint: Add two leading zeros to the leftmost nibble: 11 → 0011.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to technical and practical questions regarding this tool and base-16 conversion.

Why do we group binary in sets of 4 for hexadecimal, but sets of 3 for octal?

Because 2⁴ = 16 (hexadecimal base), while 2³ = 8 (octal base). Each hex digit represents 4 bits, while each octal digit represents 3 bits.

What is the fastest way to calculate a 4-bit nibble mentally?

Memorize the bit weights: 8, 4, 2, 1. For example, for 1011: (1×8) + (0×4) + (1×2) + (1×1) = 8 + 2 + 1 = 11, which is letter B in hex.
